Twelve Easy Ways to Make Money as a Stay-at-Home Mom

As a stay-at-home mom to two young girls, I am always looking for ways to make a little extra money.  And if you’re reading this post, I’m betting you feel the same way!

When I was pregnant with our first daughter, my husband and I decided that for us, it was worth it for me to stay home with our daughter, even if that meant money was tight and we had to make some sacrifices.

Along the way, I’ve discovered some ways that you can make real money, from the comfort of your own home. Admittedly, some of these are easier than others!  Today, I’m going to share what I’ve learned with you!

Ways I’ve Earned Money as a Stay at Home Mom

  1. Become an online tutor/teacher –

*VIPKid – When I first left the classroom in 2019 to stay home with my older daughter, I taught with VIPKid  during the early morning hours, before my husband had to work.  You can teach children English with VIPKid, an online teaching company that provides English lessons to kids ages 3-14 in China.  VIPKid does require some teaching experience, but this can be in the form of experience as a camp counselor, Sunday school teacher, or a variety of other teaching positions.

*Outschool – I have taught with Outschool for nearly four years now.  THe really cool thing about Outschool is that you can teach a class about ANYTHING.  My classes tend to have an academic focus, because my background is in education and that’s what makes sense for me.  But there are teachers on the platform that teach classes on cooking, drawing, Minecraft, social skills… the sky’s the limit!

2. Drive for Uber and/or Uber Eats – This is obviously the least “stay at home” way to make money on this list.  But if you’re creative with timing and childcare, it could work well for you!  My husband drives for Uber (and Uber Eats – you can do both at once) occasionally.  He usually goes out at night, after his workday and after our kids are sleeping.  He usually brings home at least $50 for two to three hours of work.

3. Create & sell digital products – You might already know that I sell educational and Christian resources on teacherspayteachers.com.  I create my products in Canva, but many others create theirs in PowerPoint.  Like many of the other ideas on this list, selling on TPT is NOT a get rich quick scheme, and there is a decent learning curve.  But if you enjoy creating, there is potential to make a lot of money this way!

*Lisa at ThinkTank Teacher offers some amazing courses about getting started selling on TPT and Etsy, including this FREE email course on making your TPT products stand out.

4. Take surveys – I’ll be honest – you are not going to get rich taking surveys online.  You’re probably not even going to make enough to cover your car payment.  But taking surveys can be easy money, especially if you might’ve just spent the time scrolling social media instead.  I’ve tried a few different companies, but I really like Survey Junkie.  I like the fact that you get some points even for surveys you start but don’t end up qualifying for.  Click here to check Survey Junkie out and earn some easy money.

5. Use apps like Fetch, Ibotta, and Rakuten – All three of these apps have similar premises – shop for groceries, earn rewards on your purchases.  I especially like Fetch.  Scan ANY receipt and earn points.  The points add up, and I’ve cashed out for Starbucks, Amazon, and Target gift cards!

6. Pet sit through Rover.com – This is by far my favorite way I have earned money as a stay-at-home mom.  We just started dog sitting about a ago, and we will have made over $1000 by the end of this summer… BY PLAYING WITH PUPPIES.  You can choose whether you want to board dogs in your home (that’s what we do), or house sit for other people… there are lots of different ways to make this work for your family.  If you are an animal lover, I HIGHLY recommend checking Rover out!

7. Start a blog – Again, definitely not a get rich quick idea!  I have only just started making some money from my blog.  But the income potential is there.

*Carly from Mommy on Purpose has an excellent (FREE) Start a Blog course.  I really like her teaching style – no BS, to the point, actionable steps.  If you have thought about starting a blog, definitely start here.

8. Sell on Mercari – You can sell clothes your kids’ have outgrown, jewelry, or other things that are cluttering your home.  I love Mercari because they take all the guesswork out – you can print a shipping label at home or just walk into the post office and show them your QR code, and they’ll make the shipping label for you.

8b. Another way to sell your kids’ old clothes is in-person at consignment shops!  We have a chain near us called Once Upon a Child.  Do some research to find a consignment shop near you!

9. Mystery shop – I have recently signed up for Intelli-Shop.  I haven’t actually gone out and done a mystery shop yet!  But others who have done mystery shopping have had great experiences, made some extra side money, and gotten free things like dinner out at a restaurant!

10. Become a virtual assistant – This is something I have been interested in but haven’t fully pursued.  As a virtual assistant, you can specialize in bookkeeping, email management, social media, Pinterest, and more.  I am planning to start selling my virtual assistant services on Fiverr, which is a relatively easy way to get into this business!

11. Sell POD (print on demand) books – This is another area that I plan to explore but haven’t gotten too far into yet.  You can create resources such as journals, workbooks, coloring books, and more, and sell them (at no cost to you) on Amazon KDP.

*Julie at juliehallonline.com offers some fantastic resources for getting started on Amazon KDP, including this FREE Beginners Guide to Amazon KDP.

12. Sell Arbonne products – MLM sales isn’t for everyone, but my sweet friend Carrie is killing it selling Arbonne!  She is a full-time teacher and just got promoted to district manager within their company.

So there you have it!  My top (relatively) easy ways to make money as a stay-at-home mom.  You’ll notice – the REALLY easy ones don’t make quite as much money, and the ones that make really good money aren’t QUITE as easy.  But that’s to be expected.  (In fact, if someone tries to convince you that something is truly SUPER easy and will make you a TON of money… you should probably question their motives.)  It IS possible to make real money as a stay-at-home mom.  I know you can do it!
