Easy Construction Paper Flower Craft for Kids

I have a few boxes that have to be checked to be considered a great craft for kids: it has to be easy to set up, low cost, and open-ended so that children are really creating their own masterpieces.  These construction paper flower crafts check all of those boxes, and they’re the perfect spring craft for little hands!

You could make this craft as intricate or as simple as you want.  For example, if you want to make it a more detailed project, feel free to use paint, stickers, or glitter.  But to keep this project truly simple, we used just the basics: recycled cardboard, construction paper, scissors, and glue.

This sweet and simple construction paper flower craft is great for fine motor practice!  Cutting and gluing help little hands practice these important skills in a fun and creative way. It also encourages decision-making and creativity, and you can use this craft to teach about shapes, colors, and nature in an interactive way.

Materials Needed

  • Construction paper in various colors
  • Cardboard (from the recycle bin – think cereal boxes, etc.)
  • Scissors (child-safe, if your child will be helping with the cutting)
  • Glue or glue sticks
  • Optional: markers, paint, stickers, buttons, etc.

Creating Your Construction Paper Flowers

I prepared our supplies by cutting squares (approximately 5”x5”) out of cardboard. You’ll want one cardboard square for each flower that’s going to be created.

I also cut out lots of different shapes from various colors of construction paper: I cut out at least two different triangle shapes, rectangles, squares, circles, ovals, teardrop shapes, etc.

I placed the cardboard squares and construction paper shapes on a tray, along with some glue.

If you want to include some cutting practice in the activity (which is great for fine motor skills), just include some larger squares of construction paper and child-safe scissors on the tray, too!

Next, encourage your child to use their imagination and create! Attach paper pieces to the cardboard using glue.  There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to make these flowers!

If you’re using any other materials, such as paint, glitter, stickers, or buttons, now’s the time to add them.  Again, let your child take the lead and use these materials however they choose!

Tips for Success

  • Allow children to lead the process; remember, there’s no right or wrong way to create these flowers.  In fact, one of the best parts of this craft is seeing how different they all come out!
  • Offer prompts if needed, like “What shapes could make your flower petals?”  This is also a great opportunity to talk about the names of shapes, as well as colors!
  • Consider protecting surfaces with newspaper or a drop cloth for easy cleanup.  We didn’t feel the need to put anything down when we did this craft, but you know your child best.  And if you’re using any extra materials (like glitter), you really might want to protect those surfaces!

Extensions and Variations

These flowers would make adorable cards or gifts for family members. You could have children write a note and glue it on the back, and even frame a flower to give as a sweet gift!

You could also make a garden scene by combining flowers on a large piece of cardboard. I can imagine this making an adorable backdrop for a spring-themed party!

Use the craft to teach preschoolers about parts of a flower (petals, stem, leaves). You could grow some real flowers, too, and you’d have a whole STEAM lesson!
